Who is the Navigator Most Suited To?

The Navigator is best suited to someone looking for a directional board that is good in powder, but can also handle groomers well, but they don't want a stiff aggressive ride. Rather for those that want a board that's not too demanding or fatiguing to ride and has easy maneuverability.

Particularly good for riding trees, with or without powder.

Not for beginners, but a great choice for intermediate riders who want a directional freeride board, but aren't ready or simply don't want a stiff, aggressive one. Also perfectly suitable for advanced riders who want a ride that's more easy going and more on the playful side.

    The Navigator in More Detail

O.k. let’s take a more detailed look at what the Navigator is capable of.

    Demo Info

Board: CAPiTA Navigator 2024, 158 (256mm waist width)

    Date: March 20, 2023

    Conditions

Overcast to start. But higher cloud. 85-90% visibility. Towards the end of the day there was some rain.

Temperature was around 2°C (36°F) - and -2°C (19°F) with wind chill in morning and 1°C (34°F) (and -2°C (19°F) with wind) in the afternoon. SE winds morning and afternoon at 10kph (6 mph) morning and 5kph (3 mph) in the afternoon.

    24 hour snow: 0" (0cm)

    48 hour snow: 0" (0cm)

    7 day snow: 4" (11cm)

On groomer:  Soft packed and bordering on slushy. But not ultra slow or sticky or anything. Got a touch slushier towards the end of the day, but not by much. Was pretty consistent.

Off groomer: Decent enough. Borderline slushy but not quite. Not ideal but OK.

    Set Up

    Capita Navigator 2024 snowboard review

    Bindings angles: +15/-15

    Stance width: 560mm (22″)

    Stance Setback: Setback 0.8" (20mm)

Width at front insert: 270mm (10.63")

Width at back insert: 266mm (10.47")

    Rider Height: 6'0"

    Rider Weight: 180lbs

Rider Boot Size: US9.5 Adidas Response ADV

    Bindings Used: Burton Malavita M

Control Board for Control Laps: Lib Tech Terrain Wrecker

    Weight: 2840grams (6lbs 4oz)

    Weight per cm: 17.97 grams/cm

Average Weight per cm: 18.71 grams/cm*

*based on a sample size of around 250 models that I’ve weighed in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024 models. The Navigator was lighter than average on the scales and felt lighter than normal on snow too.

    Powder

Nothing to test in on the day, but based on specs, feel and previous experience with the board, the Navigator should be really good in powder.

It's tapered directional shape (with a good amount of taper), setback stance and rocker in the profile all help with powder float.

    Carving

The Navigator is decent on a carve. It can get a little washy as you get into higher speed carves, but nothing more than you'd expect for a board of this flex/profile. Overall decent enough.

    Turning

Ease of Turning/Slashing: Really nice and easy to initiate turns on and to slash turns. Was a lot of fun to do casual turns on this board.

Maneuverability at slow speeds: Nice and quick edge-to-edge when riding slow. Turns on a dime.

Catchiness: Really uncatchy. Felt like it would be pretty hard to catch an edge on it.

    Speed

Decently fast and with good glide. Stable at speed up to a certain point, but feels a little wobbly/chattery once you get it going really fast. As you'd expect for its flex and lightness.

    Uneven Terrain

Crud: It's damper than you'd think, given how light it is, but it's not ultra damp or anything - and is prone to getting thrown off in crud/chunder, to a certain extent. But it's not super easy to loose your line and it remains decently stable through messy snow.

Trees/Bumps: One of the better boards going around for trees, IMO. It's nice and quick edge-to-edge, even at slow speeds and would perform well in trees with fresh powder too.

    Jumps

Not the kind of board that will blow you away for jumps, but still really capable.

Pop: While there's not oodles of pop in this board, what is there is really easy to access. So you can extract that pop without having to wind it up too much, which I liked.

Approach: A good mix of being fairly stable and nice and easy to make adjustments to your line or speed check, when necessary.

Landing: Solid enough and allows you to speed check easily after you land, if needed. Not a stomper or anything but decent enough on landings.

Side-hits: Really enjoyed it for side-hits. Not ideal for spins off side-hits because of how directional it is, but otherwise, that nice agility and easy access pop make this board fun on side hits.

Small jumps/Big Jumps: It's sweet spot is medium jumps, IMO, and really good for small jumps too. Can handle slightly bigger jumps, but may struggle a bit on really big jumps.

    Switch

Transitions to/from switch felt nice and catch-free and it wasn't too bad riding switch. But it did feel a little strange, as you'd expect, given how directional it is.

    Spins

Not the best to setup/land switch, though that said, there's no catchy feeling in that setup. Otherwise pretty good - it's light and has easy access pop.

    Butters

It's pretty easy to press the tip and tail on this board. The tip and tail do feel different to press, so there's that inconsistency there, but otherwise, pretty easy to lock in presses without too much effort.

The Navigator is a nimble, light, easy going directional board that is a great choice for someone who wants to be able to take advantage of powder days but when there isn't any fresh snow want something on the more mellow side to explore the groomers and trees with.

Particularly good for riding trees and while it's not a bomber or super aggressive carver, you can lay down some moderate speed carves and it will handle moderately high speeds well enough.

Who is the Navigator Most Suited To?

The Navigator is best suited to anyone looking for a directional ride that does well in powder and trees, but can also open out on the groomers when you need to and someone that wants something more mid-flex.

Also great for those looking for a freeride board on a budget.

Not for a beginner, but intermediate and up riders should be fine with this.

    The Navigator in More Detail

O.k. let’s take a more detailed look at what the Navigator is capable of.

    Demo Info

Board: Capita Navigator, 158cm (256mm waist width)

Note that the Navigator has different colors for different sizes - 147 (yellow), 151 (red), 155 (white), 158 (blue), 161 (green) and 164 (black). The image at the top of this post is the 151. I rode the 158.

    Date: February 25, 2020

Conditions: Lightly snowing picked up to moderate during testing. Some fresh over the prvious 48 hours too. Around 15cm I think.

Visibly wasn't bad though. Not 100% but 80-85%

-3°C (26.6°F) with wind. Feels about that. Cold but certainly not bone chilling cold

Off groomer some decent powder pockets in places. On groomer soft packed and quite cruddy

    Capita Navigator 2021 Review

    Bindings angles: +15/-15

    Stance width: 560mm (22″)

    Stance Setback: Setback 25mm (1")

Width at Inserts: 267mm (10.51") at front insert and 265mm (10.43")*

    Rider Height: 6'0"

    Rider Weight: 175lbs

Rider Boot Size: US10 Salomon Lo-Fi

    Bindings Used: Burton Malavita M

    Weight: 2680g (5lbs 15oz)

    Weight per cm: 16.96 grams/cm

Average Weight per cm: 18.36 grams/cm*

*based on a small sample size of around 80 boards that I've weighed in 2019, 2020 & 2021 models. The Navigator is amongst the lightest boards I've weighed! Capita boards are typically light. On snow it felt light too.

    Damp or Chattery?

A little on the chattery side of the scale. Not ultra chattery, but felt the chatter a little more than average.

    Smooth or Snappy?

More smooth than snappy but only just smooth side of center of scale

    Powder

Felt so nice to ride in powder!  And that's no big surprise, given the setback, the long nose and short tail, good amount of taper and rocker in the nose. That and a moderately wider than average overall platform.

    Carving & Turning

Carving: Good on a carve, and with the new camber profile (now directional hybrid camber, whereas it was directional flat to rocker in 2020 and previous models) it now has that bit more of a spring to it.

Turning: Turns are pretty effortless on the Navigator and it's got a turning feeling that's not super surfy, but it's also not super precise, it's just in that middle ground.

Maneuverability at slow speeds: Nice and maneuverable in slower speeds. Easy and quick getting from edge to edge, even when riding slow.

Skidded Turns: Skidding turns is doable on this board. It's pretty forgiving for when you get lazy. It's not beginner board skiddy, but pretty skidable.

    Speed

Better stability at speed than I was expecting. It's not like the fastest most stable board I've ever ridden at speed. But it's above average.

    Uneven Terrain

You can feel the chatter a little in crud - kind of comes with the territory of such a light board. But maneuvering in the crud and making adjustments as you go is awesome.

And really good for weaving through bumpy terrain - really enjoyed this board in the trees.

    Jumps

It's not a specialist jump board by any means, but it's OK - and there's a bit more pop in there now too, with the new camber profile.

Pop: Decent pop without being epic.

Approach: A good mix of stable but nimble.

Landing: Solid on landings. Not a stomper, but solid enough.

Side-hits: Pretty good without being epic.

Small jumps/Big Jumps: Fine for any size, but probably medium is the sweet spot.

    Switch

Not well suited to riding switch, but doable for short amounts of time.

    Spins

Not great for landing/taking off switch, but otherwise the spin comes around OK. Though does feel a little off balance with that long wide nose vs small tail.

    Butters

Not bad to butter. Not super buttery, but not super hard to butter either. I'd say 3.5/5.

The Navigator is a lightweight board that handles uneven terrain very well and performs at it's best when in powder or between the trees, but can also lay a decent carve and bomb pretty well.

Well suited to anyone looking for a freeride type board, but one that is easier on the wallet and softer in flex.

Who is the Navigator Most Suited To?

The Navigator is first and foremost a powder board, but one that does well on groomers too - so great for those wanting a board for powder days, but need it to be able to handle terrain to get to that powder and that is still fun to ride after the powder's all tracked.

Especially good if you want all of the above but don't like your board overly stiff. The Navigator is a nice medium flex.

Ideal as an addition to a quiver, but could be a daily driver depending on the rider and whether or not they see regular powder days. Also priced well for a quiver addition.

Not for a beginner, but intermediate riders should be fine with this board.

*based on a small sample size of 51 boards that I've weighed in 2019 and 2020 models. Lighter than normal (which is typical of Capita) for it's size - and it's got a bit of width to it as well, so really light for it's size.

    Flex

Feels like a solid medium. Capita classify it as a 6/10 for flex, and I would say that's pretty much bang on.

    Powder

Didn't have any fresh powder unfortunately, but could just tell this board would ride well on powder. And the snow was soft for the most part, so I could get some feel for how it rides in softer conditions.

And the specs certainly point towards being good in powder - a good amount of taper, a good amount of setback and with a directional camber profile, with good rocker in the nose.

    Carving & Turning

Carving: Not an epic carver, but you can still lay a decent carve on it. Which was quite surprising given that it's a directional flat to rocker profile. Surprised me a little here.

Maneuverability at slow speeds: Surprisingly good in terms of agility at slower speeds, especially given that it's relatively wide - and a longer length than I would typically ride too. This, and how it manages uneven terrain, made this a great board in the trees. Would be even better in powder in the trees.

Skidded Turns: Can skid turns on it. Not a catchy feeling at all.

Overall a smooth feeling board to turn on.

    Speed

Felt nice and stable at speed, especially when sitting toward the back foot a bit. At its flex never going to be an out and out bomber but still really good. Both flat basing and on edge felt good.

    Good glide on flats too.

    Uneven Terrain

Felt good at absorbing bumps and absorbed chatter well on crud. And nimble enough for weaving around bumps.

    Jumps

All round OK without being a jumping machine.

    Pop: OK without being epic.

Approach: A good balance between being stable and nimble.

Landing: Not a stomper, but solid enough landings.

Side-hits: Decent, without being amazing. Nimble enough for trickier approaches but not overly poppy or exciting on them.

Small jumps/Big Jumps: Pretty good for both. Medium jumps probably the sweet spot.

    Switch

Not great riding or landing/taking off switch. Doable, like pretty much any board is, and I've ridden worse for riding switch for sure.

    Spins

It's quite a light board, which helped to make it easier to get the spin around - and it was quite easy to get around, but landing/taking off switch not so great. And whilst the pop was decent, it could use a little more for spins. But not what this board is designed for at all.

    Butters

Actually reasonably buttery. Though it's not an overly stiff board for a freeride board, so not a big surprise there.

Overall, the Navigator is a well priced option for those looking for a board for powder days, that can handle the groomers well too.

If you predominantly ride on powder days, then this could be a one board quiver, but for the most part it's a good addition as a powder board that isn't just a powder board.
