Starting off our list at #10, we have Lib Tech's Off Ramp snowboard.

The Off Ramp is an aggressive-ish (but not aggressive enough for the aggressive all-mountain freestyle list) board with great pop and really decent on a carve and at speed.

At its best when getting big air and stomping landings.

Next up is the YES Airmaster. This year Lobster got absorbed by Yes. so, Yes. have some very different boards in their lineup - the Airmaster being one of them.

At the opposite end of the spectrum to the Off Ramp (within this category), the Airmaster is the most playful board in this list.

If you like you're riding loose and playful, then the Airmaster will give you that and allow creativity that's only limited by your imagination.

Next up, at #8 we have Bataleon's Whatever. After the Airmaster (see #9 above) and alongside the Jones Tweaker (see #5 below) and Never Summer V-Twin (see #7 below) the Whatever is the next most playful on this list.

It's pretty soft flexing and nice and slashy and playful. It's not a bomber, but it does feel pretty decent on a carve, especially for its flex. The 3BT helps to make it better than average in powder too.

If you're looking for a playful, slashy, buttery but versatile snowboard, the Whatever is worth considering.

Never Summer's V-Twin is new for 2025 and rounds out the more playful boards in this list. While Never Summer describes it as a 6/10 flex board that's a little more aggressive than it is playful, I found it to be softer and more playful.

But that's not a bad thing, if that's the feel you're going for. And this board is super fun to ride!

Quick whippy turns and spins, and a snappy feel characterized this board for me. Butters, jibs and ollies were all super fun on this board. Nimble and with easy pop, I loved it for side-hits and exploring trees.

Never Summer's Easy Rider, our entry at #4 is a little more on the aggressive side than most on this list, like the Off Ramp (see #10 above) and the RC C3 (See #2 below). But not something you have to always ride aggressively.

And while it's really good for carving and big air, it is still pretty easy to do more playful things, like buttering.

It's a nice, versatile ride that can take on the whole mountain, but with a distinctively freestyle flavor.

The big brother of the Rider's Choice, the RC C3 packs more camber and along with it more pop than the RC. It has different strengths and weaknesses, and while both are wicked boards for all-mountain-freestyle riding, my preference is the RC C3.

It's semi-aggressive, but something you can still slow down and play around.

Along with the Off Ramp (see #10 above) and the Greats (see #1 below), the RC C3, is the equal best hard/icy snow option on this list.

The C2X version (stable and balanced between playful and aggressive) is also a great option. I have included scores for both models below.

And finally, in at #1, is the YES Greats Uninc.

A board this stable at speed and with the kind of carving ability it displays, has no right being as buttery and playful as it is, when you want it to be.

Not a powder hound but if you’re looking for an asym twin deck you can carve up the whole mountain with,  when you're not hitting every natural hit you can find and lapping through the park, then you might have found your match in the YES Greats.

This board is my go-to on most days without powder, and particularly when there are icy conditions.

 *HARD/ICY SNOW OPTION

Kicking off the list at #10, we have Lib Tech's TRS.

The TRS is a semi-aggressive option, courtesy of it's C3 camber (almost full camber). But whilst it's the kind of board you can ride quite aggressively, it's not super-aggressive and also allows you to slow it down and play around, when you want to as well (hence why we didn't put it in the aggressive all-mtn freestyle category).

And like any all-mountain-freestyle worth it's salt, it's great for jumps, sidehits, spins etc.

In at #7, we have the Niche Crux.

It's probably the most aggressive ride in this list, but it's still not uber aggressive. Like the other semi-aggressive boards in this list, the Crux knows how to take things down a notch and chill when you're feeling like doing something more casual/playful.

But when you want to bomb and start railing carves, the Crux has got your back. One of the best carving twins on the market. But it still handles jumps and sidehits with aplomb and will have you seeking out everything you possibly can to launch off.

And finally, in at #1, is the YES Greats Uninc.

Flex: Medium (6/10)

Rating: 84.8/100

Kicking off the list in # 10 is Capita's DOA.

Performance for the buck, the Capita DOA is great value for money. But price wasn't taken into account when creating this list, so it's here on merit.

The DOA is on the more aggressive side - but just on the aggressive side of the middle of playful and aggressive. Not aggressive enough to be included in the aggressive freestyle category but one of the more aggressive on this list.

It's stand out feature is jumps, where it's great pop and light snappy feel will have you launching from whatever you can and you may not be able to wipe the smile off your face as you glide through the air and stomp back down to earth.

Next up we have the TRS slotting in at #9.

Like the DOA at #10, the TRS is one of the semi-aggressive options in this list, courtesy of it's C3 camber (almost full camber). But whilst it's the kind of board you can ride quite aggressively, it's not super-aggressive and also allows you to slow it down and play around, when you want to as well.

And like any all-mountain-freestyle worth it's salt, it's great for jumps, sidehits, spins etc.

At #8 we have the Bataleon Whatever. Alongside the Jones Tweaker (see #7 below), the Whatever is the most playful on this list.

It's pretty soft flexing and nice and slashy and playful. It's not a bomber, but it does feel pretty good on a carve, especially for its flex. The 3BT helps to make it better than average in powder too.

If you're looking for a playful, slashy, buttery but versatile snowboard, the Whatever is worth considering.

New for Jones for 2023, our #7 offering, the Jones Tweaker, is Jones' first true twin snowboard.

When you ride this thing, you don't feel like your on a Jones, it is something quite different from them. It's pretty soft and really playful. Equal most playful on this list with the Whatever (see #8 above).

If you like your riding playful and creative and want to take that to the whole mountain, including but not limited to the park, the Tweaker is a really fun option.

  *HARD/ICY SNOW OPTION

The Rider’s Choice received a new core for the 2023 model, which has changed its personality a bit. It's a little stiffer, a little damper and a little less playful.

This has made it a little more well-rounded to previous iterations, with an improvement in carving and in terms of stability at speed. It's now a little harder to butter and jib with, but you can still do those things.

And when it comes to jumps, it's still near perfect.

The Rider’s Choice is also the best equal on this list for hard and icy conditions, so if you encounter those types of conditions a lot, but still want something that feels playful enough, then this is a great option for you.

Rating: 84.5/100

Kicking off the list in # 10 is Never Summer's Peacemaker.

The Peacemaker is by far the softest board in this list. For anyone who likes to ride the mountain like the park (in addition to riding the actual park like a park!) but likes a nice soft flex, this is the one on the list for you.

By all rights it probably belongs in the Freestyle category, but those blower stance inserts does give it the ability for a larger setback than most twins - and hence more potential for powder performance on those powder days.

At #9 we have the Outerspace Living. Opposite to the Peacemaker, the Outerspace Living is more on the all-mountain side of all-mountain-freestyle. In fact, it was borderline in the All-Mountain category now that it has a small setback stance.

I might even reconsider it for that category for next year, but for now it remains in this category and justifiably so, with the way you can ride freestyle on this thing - and the all-mountain side of it ain't bad either.

One of the better powder performers on this list too, in addition to being the lowest price board on this list. Versatile and value for money.

It's more camber dominant and loses the asymmetry the Type Two had - as well as some other changes - see Full Review link above for more details on the changes.

Despite a number of changes from the Type Two, the Synthesis keeps a lot of the same attributes and is clearly from the same DNA as the Type Two - one of the better boards on the market for riding the whole mountain like a park - and able to carve and bomb well too, when the need arises.

The Asymulator is a snappy, light and lively, super fast edge-to-edge board and just loves to get airborne. And that asymmetrical sidecut really helps to get a good carve on both heel and toe.

ALL-MOUNTAIN-FREESTYLE BOARD #2

GNU Riders Choice review

Board: GNU Rider’s Choice

Flex: Medium

Rating: 90.8/100

  *HARD/ICY SNOW OPTION

The Rider’s Choice is an awesome deck for riding freestyle and can hack it all over the mountain too.

It can lay down a carve, it can jib and it’s not too bad at speed – but where this board really stands out – riding the other direction (aka switch) and on jumps (whether those jumps be of the man made or nature made variety). It's also super quick edge-to-edge.

It's near perfection for jumps - it's poppy, stable on landings and nice to spin. It's a lively board that is just, for lack of a better word - sharp.

The Rider’s Choice is also the best equal on this list for hard and icy conditions, so if you encounter those types of conditions a lot, but still want something that feels playful enough, then this is a great option for you.

  *HARD/ICY SNOW OPTION

And in at #1 is the YES Greats Uninc.

A board this fast and with the kind of carving ability it displays, has no right being so good at riding switch and hitting the jumps. But it does just that.

Not a powder hound (though it's a little better than it was with the new wider shape), but if you’re looking for a deck you can carve up the whole mountain with,  when you're not hitting every natural hit you can find and lapping through the park, then you might have found your match in the YES Greats.

The 4th of 4 Asym boards in this list, this board just feels so nice and natural to turn on and you can really feel that sharpness in those heel side turns.

Thanks for reading and I hope this post has helped to narrow down some options if you’re looking for an all-mountain-freestyle snowboard.

Be sure to check out the score breakdown's to see which might suit you the best.

If you want to learn more about any of these boards or check out current prices, check out the links at the top of each board description above.

Changes for the 2021-22 list

Some changes that went into choosing this list:

  • The list has gone from a top 5 to a top 10
  • I brought in some boards that I previously had in the aggressive all-mtn-freestyle category that were always borderline between that category and this one. I have more clarity over the differences between that category and this one now. Anything in the aggressive-all-mtn-freestyle category now has a flex of 6.5 and over. This is consistent with the aggressive all-mountain list and the freeride (versus surfy freeride) list.
  • For this reason boards like the Crux, RC C3 and TRS have all become a part of this category and subsequently make this list
  • The normalization number for scores was changed to better reflect the quality of the boards in this list (but that's a very technical aspect of the scoring system - and I don't want to bore you too much with that!)

And the #4 board is the Never Summer Proto Synthesis.

New for 2021, the Proto Synthesis takes over where the Proto Type Two left off.

And for good reason - this is a great board for doing everything you want anywhere you want. Like most all-mountain-freestyle decks, it's biggest weakness is in powder - but for everything else, you can't go past it.

Capita Outerspace Living

Board: Capita Outerspace Living

Price: $399

Flex: Medium (5/10)

Rating: 87.6/100

The Outerspace Living is a really light feeling board – both in hand and on snow. And that makes it nice and easy to throw around and enhances the pop you get from it. This is one of the lightest boards I have weighed.

But it's not just light - it's also incredibly versatile and feels at home anywhere on the mountain. More resort and park focused than backcountry, but it can handle powder and something you can definitely take off-groomer and through the trees. But wherever you go, you can ride freestyle.

It’s the cheapest board on this list – and cheaper than the average price for this category of board by over $80. And $150 cheaper than the next cheapest in this top 5. So it’s great value for money! And prices weren’t taken into account for the scoring so this board makes it here on merit, and the price thing is just an awesome bonus.

So, if you’re looking for the performance of more pricey all-mountain-freestyle board but you’re on a lower budget, then the Outerspace Living is a great option.

It's not the carver that the Proto Type Two is, but it makes up for it in other areas  - and has a more playful feel.

The Rider’s Choice is also the best on this list for hard and icy conditions, so if you encounter those types of conditions a lot, then this is a great option for you.

  *HARD/ICY SNOW OPTION

And in at #1 is the YES Greats Uninc.

A board this fast and with the kind of carving ability it displays, has no right being so good at riding switch and hitting the jumps. But it does just that.

Not a powder hound (though it's a little better than it was with the new wider shape), but if you’re looking for a deck you can carve up the whole mountain with, at pace, hitting every natural hit you can find and then taking a detour through the park, then you might have found your match in the YES Greats.

The 3rd of 3 Asym boards in this list, this board just feels so nice and natural to turn on and you can really feel that sharpness in those heel side turns.

The Greats underwent a transformation for the 2019 model, adopting the Mid-Bite that some other YES boards have. Whilst I was skeptical at first, I was amazed at how this board got even better. Whilst it's marginally slower edge-to-edge, it's got better edge-hold, a snappier feel and a super solid landing platform. And it just has that X factor that I just can't describe.

All Mountain Freestyle Board #5

Salomon Assassin Pro 2018Board: Salomon Assassin Pro

Flex: Medium (6/10)

Rating: 85.4/100

The Assassin Pro is the lightest board I rode all season (the lightest board I’ve ever ridden, I would say) – but it’s got a lot more going for it than just lightness – it carves really well, can handle a bit of speed and is just super fun to ride.

And that lightness does help to make an already pretty poppy board even more springy and really easy to spin – not to mention being nice on the legs, both for turning and on the lifts.

If light is something that’s important for you and you otherwise want a board with great performance for all-mountain-freestyle riding, then the Assassin Pro is a great choice.

This was one of my favorite boards that I rode last season. Like the Assassin Pro (see #5), the Outerspace Living is a really light feeling board – both in hand and on snow.

It’s also the cheapest board on this list – and cheaper than the average price for this category of board by over $100. So it’s super value for money! And prices weren’t taken into account for the scoring so this board makes it here on merit, and the price thing is just a really awesome bonus.

So, if you’re looking for the performance of more pricey all-mountain-freestyle board but you’re on a lower budget, then the Outerspace Living is a no-brainer.

And the #1 board for the 2017-18, as it was in 2016-17 is…. the Never Summer Proto Type Two.

It’s predecessor, the Proto HD made the 2015-16 list but it was at number 4. The upgrades to the Proto Type Two have turned this board into a near perfect all-mountain-freestyle machine.

I had the privilege to ride this deck all over Whistler – and man, this is one killer deck. So much fun!

Never Summer’s Proto Type Two is the perfect board for riding freestyle over the whole mountain. It holds it’s own in the powder, when carving and on jibs. And it really comes to life on jumps and rides switch like it was born to.

And if you also want to venture into the pipe, the Proto will be a wicked tool to climb the walls with – a characteristic any all-mountain-freestyle board worth its salt should have.

All Mountain Freestyle Board #5

yes-basic-snowboard-2017Board: YES Basic

Price: $399

Flex: Medium-Soft

Rating: 84.3/100

I also rate this as a great beginner deck but as an all-mountain-freestyle deck it’s also up there amongst the best.

Whilst not the numeber 1 on this list, it is the cheapest option on this list and at this price it really is an amazing deck if you like to ride freestyle over the whole mountain but don’t want to pay too much.

It is also the softest flexing deck on this list so if you like your riding nice and mellow, you can’t go wrong. But don’t think that stops you from riding this deck if you encounter a lot of ice. It’s also great in icy conditions. Check out the score breakdown below for its particular strengths and weaknesses.

This board has won numerous awards, is packed full of tech and is backed by some seriously good pros. But is it worthy of all this praise?

Absolutely. If you had to be picky about a weakness you might say it wouldn’t be the first choice in powder. But in every other category this board will excel.

And of course with the magne-traction tech this board will be awesome in hard and icy snow conditions.

The TRS was 2nd on this list last year. It’s not that it’s a worse board this year – to even make this list it has to be an outstanding snowboard – it’s just that there were some seriously good decks for 2017 that I liked just that bit more.

The TRS comes in the standard version (which is now a HP (horsepower) version) and an FP (firepower) version. The FP version is lighter and better but also costs significantly more.

Check out the full review at the link above, the video below and score breakdown below for more details.

The Eco Choice is the Eco-ized (is that a word? It is now!) version of the GNU Rider’s Choice. Both the Eco Choice and Rider’s Choice are awesome decks for riding freestyle and can hack it all over the mountain too.

Like the two boards above (#4 and #5), the Eco Choice is also excellent in hard and icy snow conditions, thanks in part to the magne-traction edges.

It can lay down a carve, it can jib and it’s not too slow – but where this board really stands out – riding the other direction (aka switch) and on jumps (whether those jumps be of the man made or nature made variety).

It has also been awarded a 2017 Good Wood award from Transworld Snowboarding.
