Bataleon Feelbetter Snowboard Review

The Bataleon Feelbetter is a playful board that prefers gentler speeds to higher velocities. But at those gentler speeds it's super fun, confidence inspiring and allows you to get all sorts of creative, doing things you wouldn't try on a stiffer, more aggressive board. 

In this review, I will take a look at the Feelbetter as an all-mountain-freestyle snowboard, which we define as the versatile all-round snowboard that leans more towards the freestyle end of the spectrum.

Who is the Feelbetter Most Suited To?

The Feelbetter is best suited to riders who are looking for a playful board that's easy going, quick turning and lots of fun for smaller jumps, spins, jibs and just cruising groomers without having to expend too much energy. 

Not for those that want to ride fast or carve deep. 

Could be a one board quiver for the right rider or could compliment a quiver with a more powder specialized board and/or a stiffer, more stable board. 

I would say the Feelbetter is suitable for beginners. It's easy to initiate turns on and forgiving and a lot of fun to ride. It is on the looser side, so one-footing it off the lift could pose challenges, but otherwise I'd say it would be a great board for building confidence on.

Powder

No powder out there to try this board out on, but I think it would hold up fairly well. It does have a slight directional shape and some rocker in the nose which should help give it some float, along with the 3D shaping in the base. 

Carving

Not a carving board – I repeat – not a carving board! The Feelbetter just lacks the stability to lay down carves, no matter the size or speed. It felt really loose and chattery, so I steered clear of it after a few attempts.

Ease of Turning/Slashing: Much better, and that's an understatement, turning than carving. Turns were easy to initiate and link back-to-back. Plus, slashing out the tail was a lot of fun.

Maneuverability at slow speeds: I could maneuver really easily on this board when at lower speeds. It felt light and agile underfoot.

Catchiness:  The Feelbetter offered a pretty catch-free feel despite the varied snow conditions. I think the Triple Base Tech helped a bit to smooth this ride out.

Speed

Hey, this one might not be a speed demon, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to ride! This deck was definitely better for slower, more relaxed riding. Could be a really good choice for a newer rider looking to gain some confidence, but for the riders looking to bomb the steep stuff, I would look elsewhere.

Uneven Terrain

Crud/Chunder: This board is just too soft to plow through cruddy snow. I was able to maintain control without any wipeouts, but it felt really chattery.

Trees/Bumps: The Feelbetter is so nimble and lightweight that it moved quite well through obstacles. With a little extra stability, it would have been perfect.

Jumps

Pop: Super easy to access, but what you find when you wind up is pretty much where it maxes out.

Approach: It handled pretty well on the approach, and I was able to check speed and direction without difficulty.

Landing: This board lacked the stability for speed and solid carves, but when landing jumps, it felt pretty good.

Side-hits: Definitely a highlight. The soft flex, easy to find pop, and stability through landings made the Feelbetter a great board for small side-hits.

Small jumps/Big jumps: Pretty strong performance, overall. I would say this one is a lot stronger taking on smaller to medium kickers than sailing it off huge jumps.

Switch

It was easy to make transitions, but I didn’t feel quite as solid when in fakie as I’d typically like to.

Spins

I thought spins were pretty strong for the most part, but once again, I just wished I could find a little more stability when coming down off aerial spins.

Jibbing

I had a great time hitting different features through the park. The board sets up and lands well, making it pretty easy to jib.

Butters

Pretty strong for pressing into the nose and tail, but not quite as smooth when buttering. Felt a little too loose.

The Feelbetter isn't for those seeking speed to satisfy their thrills, but it's a super fun, playful ride when doing things at gentler speeds. It's the kind of board that gives you confidence to get creative and try things that you wouldn't dare on a more aggressive board.
