Who are the Trilogy  Most Suited To?

The Trilogy are best suited to anyone looking for mid-flexing bindings that strike a good balance between faster riding/carving and slower riding with good agility. And something that across all factors don't show any areas of weakness and provide a good predictable, smooth response.

Best matched with boards in the 4/10 to 7/10 flex range and particularly good for boards in that 5/10 to 6/10 range.

    The Trilogy  in More Detail

Union Trilogy 2024 Snowboard Bindings Review

O.k. let’s take a more detailed look at what the Trilogy are capable of.

    Demo Info

    Bindings: Union Trilogy  2024, Medium

    Date: March 20, 2023

    Conditions

Overcast to start. But higher cloud. 85-90% visibility. Towards the end of the day there was some rain.

Temperature was around 2°C (36°F) - and -2°C (19°F) with wind chill in morning and 1°C (34°F) (and -2°C (19°F) with wind) in the afternoon. SE winds morning and afternoon at 10kph (6 mph) morning and 5kph (3 mph) in the afternoon.

    24 hour snow: 0" (0cm)

    48 hour snow: 0" (0cm)

    7 day snow: 4" (11cm)

On groomer:  Soft packed and bordering on slushy. But not ultra slow or sticky or anything. Got a touch slushier towards the end of the day, but not by much. Was pretty consistent.

Off groomer: Decent enough. Borderline slushy but not quite. Not ideal but OK.

    Set Up

    Bindings angles: +12/-9

    Stance Width: 530mm (20.9″)

    Board demoed with: GNU Klassy

    Footbed length: 23.5cm (9.3”)

Footbed Length Fully Extended: 24.5cm (9.7”)

    Baseplate Length (underside):  22.7cm (8.9")

    Highback Height: 19.5cm (7.7”)

    Weight: 980 grams (2lb, 3oz)

    * for one binding, including screws and disc. The average weight of a small sample size of women's bindings that we've weighed (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024 models) is 825 grams (1lb 13oz). So the Trilogy was heavier than average on the scales, but felt normal on snow.

    Tester: Meira

    Rider Height:  5'4 (163cm)

    Rider Weight: 130lbs (58kg)

Rider Boot Size: US Women's 8 (Burton Limelite)

    Control Bindings: Union Milan

    Flex

The Trilogy felt very middle-of-the-road in its overall flex. Nothing too stiff but not overly soft either.

    Responsiveness

Maneuverability at slower speeds was good. Not quite as good as my control bindings (Union Milan) but when it came to carving they allowed for a deeper carve vs my control bindings.

Overall they provided a nice smooth response.

    Board Feel/Butterability

Board feel was not as good as it is with my control bindings, but they are very good. A little harder to press with these. But nothing terrible or anything.

    Pop/Ollie Power

Very similar to control bindings, but just a little less.

    Adjustability

    Heel Cup: Yes!

Stance Width: Can run disc horizontal and that allows micro stance width adjustments.

    Highback Lean: Yes and tool-less.

    Ankle Strap Position: No.

Toe Strap Position: Yes - 2 position options – you’ve got to kind of unclip the plastic bit at the bottom of the baseplate to change positions but it’s not too hard.

Ankle and toe strap length: Tool-less.

    Gas pedal/toe ramp extension: Yes

Highback Rotation: Yes - 2 position options.

    Compatible with: 2 x 4 | 4 x 4 | The Channel

    Shock Absorption

Good amount of padding (2.3cm angling down to 2.1cm at heel (canted) and 2.6cm down to 2.4cm on toe end) and nice cush/springy feel to it. Also has a new "Molecular Bushing Suspension System" which may also help with shock absorption.

On snow they did a really good job of absorbing shock on landings and chatter.

    Comfort

Overall didn't notice any discomfort from pressure points or anything like that, really comfortable.

Ankle Strap: Felt good and no pressure points.

    Toe Strap: Ditto ankle strap.

    Canted Footbed: Yes

Padded Footbed: Good padding (see shock absorption section above)

Highback: Good bit of padding and flex to the highback - and no calf-bite when testing on snow.

    Ankle Support

It's not top of the line, but it's pretty good. There are no ankle strap position options, it is where it is. So you can't put it higher up the ankle if you're wanting more ankle support or anything like that, but I liked it in the position it's in.

    Entry/Exit

Good ratchet smoothness and no issues getting in or out of them.

    WordPress Responsive Table

The Trilogy are solid bindings that scored well across all the factors we test for.

They've had an overhaul for the 2024 model and overall we like the changes. They're not quite as good for higher speed carves compared to what they used to be, but they've improved in terms of agility at slower speeds and have increased their ability to absorb shock.

Who are the Trilogy Most Suited To?

The Trilogy are best suited to anyone looking for a slightly stiffer than medium binding that produce a smooth, even, consistent response and an all round good quality binding with a reasonable price tag.

Pairs well with boards in a flex range between 5/10 to 7/10.

Not for beginners, but good for solid intermediate riders and up.

    The Trilogy in More Detail

O.k. let’s take a more detailed look at what the Trilogy are capable of.

    Demo Info

    Binding: Union Trilogy 2022, M

Conditions: Sunny! As in not a single cloud in the sky! So, naturally, perfect visibility.

-4°C (25°F) with and without  wind - no wind. Felt warmer than that though - because of the sun.

    24 hours snow: 2cm (1")

    7 day snow: 45cm (18")

On Groomer: Hard but not icy.

Off Groomer: Crunchy and with some icy patches.

    Union Trilogy Bindings 2022 Review

    Bindings angles: +12/-12

    Stance Width: 510mm (20”)

    Baseplate Length: 23.4cm (9.21”)

    Baseplate Fully Extended: 24.4cm (9.61")

    Highback Height: 20cm (7.9”)

    Weight: 840 grams (1lbs, 14oz)

    Tester: Rhona

    Rider Boots: Women's US7 Thirty Two TM-2

Test Bindings Used: Burton Lexa, Medium

Test Board: Burton Déjà Vu Flying V

    Responsiveness

The Trilogy is that great balance of being good on a big carve but at the same time allow really good maneuverability at slow speeds.

It's got a smooth, even, consistent response, as opposed to a more explosive/springy response.

    Board Feel/Butterability

Given the full size disc and nothing to really indicate that it's be great for buttering, pressing etc, it's actually pretty good. Not up there with the best, but better than average for sure.

    Pop/Ollie Power

Normal. Felt the same as the control bindings (Burton Lexa)

    Adjustability

Heaps of adjustability on the Trilogy. One of the more adjustable bindings on the market.

Heel Cup: Yes and this makes heel/toe boot centering easy, which allows you to run the disc horizontally, to give you more stance width options.

Stance Width: Really good - you can run the disc horizontally (which you can pretty much always do, because the heel cup adjustment takes care of your boot centering).

    Highback Lean: Yes (tool-less)

    Ankle Strap Position: No

    Toe Strap Position: Yes

Ankle and toe strap length: Yes (tool-less)

    Gas pedal/toe ramp extension: Yes

Highback Rotation: Yes, 3 different slots

    Compatible with: 2 x 4 | 4 x4 | The Channel (so basically everything).

    Shock Absorption

Good amount of padding in the footbed. Quite thick and cushy. It's not quite as "reboundy' as it is on the Legacy, but still feels nice.

On snow that translated to really good shock absorption on landings from jumps and in terms of general chatter.

    Entry/Exit

Nice and easy to get in and out of. Nice smooth ratchets.

    Comfort

    Overall nice and comfortable.

Ankle Strap: Zero pressure points. Hardly noticed it was there.

    Toe Strap: Ditto ankle strap.

    Canted Footbed:  Yes

Padded Footbed: Yes - good 2.3cm of padding. Absorbed shock and chatter well, which helps with comfort, but also just standing on something like that all day is better than standing on something hard.

Highback: Good padding on the highback and the main thing - zero calf bite.

    Ankle Support

Really good ankle support. Felt secure in these bindings.

Overall, a really solid dependable pair of bindings, that get the job done for a good range of boards in that mid to mid-stiff flex range.

They produce a nice even response and overall have zero weaknesses.
